Biodiesel is fuel made from vegetable and animal sources. Biodiesel is an alternative
to petroleum diesel fuel. It can be used in any diesel engine without modification and
as home heating oil. Biodiesel can be used in its pure form (B100) or can be blended with
petroleum diesel. Biodiesel burns 78% cleaner than petroleum diesel and is less toxic
than table salt.
Every year the United States consumes approximately 60 billion gallons of diesel fuel.
The capacity for biodiesel production in the United States is currently 800 million gallons
annually and is expected to grow to 15 billion gallons by 2015. Increasing the use of biodiesel
in the United States will have tremendous benefits for New York City, America and our world:
-
Biodiesel emits 78% less carbon dioxide than petroleum, thus relieving the effects
of global warming
-
Biodiesel emits 47% fewer particulates than petroleum biodiesel
-
Biodiesel is produced domestically, thus reducing America’s dependency on foreign
sources of energy
-
Sources of biodiesel are renewable
-
Biodiesel production creates local jobs
-
Biodiesel, by providing an alternative disposal method for used cooking oil,
saves tax payers money by reducing clogs in the City’s sewer system
